English term

dissolution

English Tech/Engineering Computers (general)
The total view indicates the scanned picture with a dissolution of pixel of ca.100µm.

Any chance this might be resolution instead of dissolution? The English text has been translated from another language.

Discussion

Jonathan Widell (asker) Sep 5, 2005:
Or maybe I should do a literal translation. Is it my problem if the source text is poor?
Ken Cox Sep 5, 2005:
In that case, I hope you charge more for creative translation (aka guessing the original meaning).
Non-ProZ.com Sep 5, 2005:
Some more context: "In the total view, the scanned part is indicated. No evaluations from this picture are referred, because the dissolution is sampled."
Non-ProZ.com Sep 5, 2005:
The translation is a bit iffy across the board, which is why I am asking.

dissoluzione

Alhough possible that it should have been "resolution" it could well be "dissolution" ("dissoluzione" in Italian).

Dissoluzione: La dissoluzione di un'immagine digitale dipende dal numero dei Pixel salvati. Tanto più alta è la dissoluzione quanto più acuta sembra l'immagine. In Toy Story le 3-D-immagini constano normalmente di 1,536x 922 Pixel.

There are lots of hits on google/yahoo for dissolution, which appears to be a synonimous of "resolution" in this context. However, they may all be wrong. The term "dissoluzione" appears often in the Italin language instead of "resolution" so it could simply be a bad translation...

resolution

It must be 'pixel resolution' (ignorant translation).

agree ooooo (X) : i agree with you, unless they mean the opposite!

Given the quoted reference in Ivana's answer, it appears it can very well be a mistranslation. 'Picture dissolution' sounds pretty unlikely in English (more context would of course help to determine whether something else might be meant).

dissoluutio

Dissoluutio eli hajoaminen on yleisessä käytössä pikseleistä puhuttaessa.

First your question was from French into Finnish, that's why I answered in Finnish. Pixel dissolution is used, for instance in the link.
