adopting corporate firms

English Art/Literary Architecture architectural theory
The text I'm translating describes a project for the Venice Architecture Biennale 2008.

Cultural leadership is not celebrated within our field, and this is most apparent in the young. Like the early *adopting corporate firms* of the 1980s that drifted from corporate modernism, to post-modern historicism, to deconstruction, all the while servicing their clients with contemporary styling; the motto is celebrate service, apologize for design with pseudo-scientific justifications and promise just a little sizzle of freshness.

Can anybody explain what "adopting" means?
Thank you!

early-adopting

Part of the problem may be the way you break up the sentence: The focus is not just "adopting" - specifically the phrase is "early-adopting" - the first wave of users (or here, companies) to adopt a trend.

art-boom corporations of the 1980's

There was a trend in the 1980's for corporations to purchase art for their large buildings. This created a boom for art exhibits and exposure of art to workers and the public. Referring to it as the 'art-boom corporations of the 1980's' is as close as I can get to coining a name for the times and the corporations as a group.

'adopting' would mean that present day corporations should 'act' more like their art-collecting predecessors of the 80's and act as cultural leaders.
Example sentence:

The art-boom corporations of the 80's began a trend that lasted for many years, amassing fine art collections displayed in office buildings.

early adopter

"An early adopter is a person who embraces new technology before most other people do. Early adopters tend to buy or try out new hardware items and programs, and new versions of existing programs, sooner than most of their peers."

In other words, firms of the 80s used to buy modern art because they wanted to be ahead of everyone else. In their pursuit of innovation and distinction, they adopted, in other words accepted and bought art that most people at the time wouldn't think of buying.
