: Billigladen is derogatory (almost insulting),and is no way to market a product or brand - imagine you are a store owner thinking of purchasing such products for selling on - would you like to be called a Billigladen? Sorry, was supposed to be a neutral!

: Nearly a similar connotation like Yorkshireman mentioned. An example: "Value for money" is used as one of the four (?) core values of a fast food chain represented all over the world. No one speaks about "Billigessen" there.

Kauf und Spar is common in all sorts of retail and other segments as an expression - and as a brand name in Germany and Austria.
Even the supermarket in the comedy cartoon series "Die Simpsons" goes is called the "Kauf-und-Spar-Markt"

Yes - and in Austria, too. As you know, as a marketing translator, in marketing, creativity in the "concoction" of names, descriptions and slogans is not forbidden - in fact, it is quite the reverse. It is hardly ever a domain for 1:1 translation.

Die einzelnen Ladentypen werden ja meist nach Größe der Verkaufsfläche und auch der Bedienungsform unterschieden.
Im AT wird ja explizit die Position zwischen den Drogeriemärkten und dem Fachhandel genannt. Ich würde die "value for money stores" also irgendwo in der Richtung der Fachmärkte ansiedeln.
Bei Schreibwaren also so etwas wie Staples, die eine riesige Halle mit jeder Menge Auswahl sind. Beratung gibt es dort (kostenfrei) nach Bedarf. Aber nicht in dem exklusiven Ambiente, wie im Fachhandel.
Deshalb dieser Antwortvorschlag einfach mal als Diskussionsgrundlage.
Wie immer gilt: Verbesserungsvorschläge, Kritik und Verrisse werden gerne entgegengenommen.

thanks for the URLs - there is a BIG difference between journalism (your links) and marketing - journalists bring it to the point, marketers put sugar on everything. They want to sell or place a product in a particular segment or target group and do everything they can to avoid negative connotations. Billigladen is therefore a no go in marketing copy. They never say "cheap", they say low-cost, attractively priced, unbeatable prices and similar.
