The confusing thing here is that 'nonnetje' is both the name of a bird, and the name of a shell. In this particular case, we are talking about the shell (which the birds feed on).
The Latin name of the shell 'nonnetje' is 'Macoma balthica' (see reference).

Unfortunately I don't know its name in Portuguese, but I thought this might be helpful information.
