Dutch term

bokken

Dutch to English Tech/Engineering Ships, Sailing, Maritime Marina/Boat storage
Dear colleagues,

Today I need you help regarding the term "bokken" in the very last sentence of the following text passage.

Thank you in advance for your input/translation suggestions (preferably English UK) and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Patrick John Burhorn (asker) Jan 5, 2016:
@ all Thanks a million for your input, remarks and translation suggestions!

Michael Beijer Jan 4, 2016:
@Evgeny + Barend: Yeah, I agree. I think Evgeny should enter "cradles" (or "cradle (boat) stands") as his answer (as he mentioned it first). He'd get my Agree.
Barend van Zadelhoff Jan 4, 2016:
Here you can see what these 'bokken' are about This is the company of Patrick's questions.

Please look at the shifting images at the top of the page.
I think 'cradle' would be the best name for these 'bokken', something that was suggested already at one of the previous questions.

Michael Beijer Jan 4, 2016:
@Evgeny: I suppose it will also depend on the size of the boats that are being propped up.
Michael Beijer Jan 4, 2016:
I think "bokken" are these things: http://www.bootbokken.nl/attachments/Image/aegir.JPG (i.e., the draaggestel that a boat can be rested on)
Evgeny Artemov (X) Jan 4, 2016:
Sounds like 'keel-blocks' Alternatively: skids; docking blocks; keel block; keelblock; middle blocks; cradles (the last one is mostly for yachts and yacht trailers).
Patrick John Burhorn (asker) Jan 4, 2016:
@ writeaway I need it for the combination NL-EN (UK)!
writeaway Jan 4, 2016:
Have you checked Van Dale Either Nl-En oder Nl-De?

cradles

At Mike's and Barend's suggestion. Thanks, pals.

Thank you Barend! :-)

Thank you Louis!
agree Wiard Sterk : My boat is lifted into a cradle every winter.

Thank you Wiard!
agree Kitty Brussaard : On the basis of 'voortschrijdend inzicht', I now think this is indeed the best answer (assuming 'bokken' is used here in the true sense of the word (EN cradles) and does not comprise 'bootsteunen' (EN boat stands / yacht legs) as well.

Thank you Kitty!

boat stands

This would do in US EN.
There are all kinds of boat stands, sailboats, motor boats, small, large....

Professionals use boat stands:

agree Kitty Brussaard : Agree with Michael, boat stands is probably the safest option here. / Or would these rather be known as 'bootsteunen' in NL? // As far as I can see, 'bokken' are single/integrated support frames vs 'boat stands' used as multiple standalone items.
36 mins

disagree Wiard Sterk : In the UK we use cradles. Don't think you would get far with 'boat stand' in marinas here.

Well, I do mention that it would do in US EN, but maybe you overlooked that?

Following on from my earlier post on constructing simple low “dogs” for rowing shells, this post describes the construction of larger rowing boat trestles. Thanks!
neutral Kitty Brussaard : As far as I can see, the term 'trestles' seems to be used mainly in relation to rowing boats. Your last option (cradles) seems to be more generally applicable.

Indeed. I agree: "cradles" or "boat stands" then.
