Dutch term

machinaal verspaner

Dutch to English Tech/Engineering Metallurgy / Casting Certificate from ROC Eindhoven
I am translating a certificate for a 'Machinaal Verspaner' granted by the School for Mechanical Engineering and Metals at ROC Eindhoven.

I have translated it as 'Metals Process Worker' and wonder whether there are any other suggestions out there that would fit.

Jansje Karajas (asker) Nov 28, 2017:
Machine Operator versus Machinist Thank you SchweineKarl for your contribution to finding a suitable translation for Machinaal Verspaner. I note you are adamant that Machinist is correct, however, my deadline was 25 Nov so I had already decided on Machine Operator in consultation with the client. I did note amongst the many definitions excerpted from dictionaries that a person who operates a sewing machine can also be termed a machinist so maybe the term is only really specific depending on the context. I would be happy to award 3 points for your answer but am unsure of how to do so.
Michael Beijer Nov 27, 2017:
gotcha! I think I understand now.
SchweineKarl Nov 27, 2017:
No, "machine operator" is way too general if you look at the source term (machinaal verspaner). If the source term is detailed and specific, the translation should also be. A person who uses a coffee machine is also a machine operator. Since this is a translation of a certificate, you need to use a specific term, because "machine operator" doesn't tell the person who is reading the English version anything. What is important here, is that the exact skill is reflected in the translation and "machinist" does that.
Michael Beijer Nov 27, 2017:
The "machinist" wikipedia page above/below inks to this NL page:

https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paswerker

"Paswerker

(PS: not saying this is correct, just wondering how to interpret all these different terms)
Michael Beijer Nov 27, 2017:
"Machinist

A machinist is a person who machines using hand tools and machine tools to prototype, fabricate or make modifications to a part that is made of metal, plastics, or wood.

Related occupational titles[edit]
Under the machinist title are other specialty titles that refer to specific skills that may be more highly developed to meet the needs of a particular job position, such as fitter (assembles parts), turning hand, mill hand, and grinder. Some titles reflect further development of machinist skills such as tool and die maker, patternmaker, mold maker, programmer, and operator. Depending on the company, a machinist can be any or all of the titles listed above. A machinist is one who is called on to fix a problem with a part or to create a new one using metal working, plastic, or in some cases, wood."

I'm trying to figure out the difference, in English, between a "machinist", and a "machine operator" (or Lathe/milling Machine Operator, etc.). As per Merriam-Webster's 3rd def.: machinist (EN):

"machinist: b. a craftsman skilled in the use of machine tools — sometimes distinguished from machine operator c : MACHINE OPERATOR" (but, distinguished in which way exactly?)
Michael Beijer Nov 27, 2017:
@SchweineKarl: I think either can be correct ("machine operator" or "machinist") as a translation of "machinaal verspaner".

See my dictionary refs in my answer.
SchweineKarl Nov 26, 2017:
Een machinaal verspaner is een "machinist" in het Engels.
