Dutch term

moraliteitsonderzoek

background check(s)

When an employer or the police want to judge a person's 'morality' they do this by means of background checks - this seems quite a good fit here to me.

agree Tina Vonhof (X) : This is what it's called in Canada as well. It does not have to involve a criminal record; it's required for many jobs, particularly if it involves dealing with people, firearms licences, and for any other threats to public safety or security.

request for a Letter of Good Standing/Opinion on moral good standing

I think this is part of the background check (see: https://www.jobpol.be/nl/jobs-in-uniform/selectieprocedure/m...

If you look for moraliteitsverklaring in the JurLex, you get:

letter of good standing

If you search on the Internet, you will find letter and certificate of good standing. See: https://concordma.gov/1415/Request-Letter-of-Good-Standing

The website https://www.cpni.gov.uk/ has an interesting pdf about How to obtain an Overseas Criminal Record Check. They talk about the following in this document:
Where a criminal record has been identified, the certificate includes the following:
•Full details of father;
•Type of crime;
•Nature of offence;
•Result of case;
•Social status;
•Political involvement/activities;
•Opinion on moral good standing;
•Full name and rank of investigation officer; and
•Name of magistrate and date of sentencing (if relevant).

investigation into whether someone poses a threat to public safety or to the peace

bit long-winded this - might be easiest to go with JurLex tbh

https://www.gov.uk/shotgun-and-firearm-certificates

You must also prove to the chief officer of police that you’re allowed to have a firearms certificate and pose no danger to public safety or to the peace.

A shotgun certificate won’t be given or renewed if the chief officer of police has a reason that you shouldn’t be allowed to have a shotgun under the Firearms Act. Or if they don’t think you have a good reason to have, buy or acquire a shotgun.
