girls' horse story

Could be "girlfriends' horse story", but 'girlfriends' can be taken out of context.
Peer comment(s):

agree Christopher Schröder : Yes, let's keep it simple. In fact, I'd go for just plain "horse story" as it already says it's for girls. (It's a given that horse stories for girls that age are about friendship.)

story about the friendship between a young girl and a filly

The explanation is longer and less eloquent than the Danish phrase.
A filly is a young female horse, not yet a mare. This reminds me of the film "My friend Flikka". There is obviously a series of stores that share this theme. You might say "A young girl and her filly". Each series probably has a title with fictional names.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Jeppe Fischer : I don't read the Danish sentence as if it's a friendship between a girl and a filly, but between two girls who are both fond of horses.

Friendship between people and animals is as common as any other type of friendship, true and mutual, and almost all of these stories are exactly about that. "My Friend Flikka", "Black Beauty", "The Black Stallion", and now these stories mentioned here.
neutral Christopher Schröder : Whatever the Danish meaning, Black Beauty for one was a boy :-)

story about girls and their love for horses

I agree with Brian that the English version of the Danish "hestevenindehistorie" - for once - has to consist of several words.
But opposite to Brian I understand the Danish sentence as if it's about the friendship of two (or more) girls and their common love for horses.

disagree Brian Young : I think perhaps we are all reading more into that sentence than it actually contains. "hestevenindehistorie". I think there could be more than one interpretation, but I don't get the feeling that it is "girls" in plural. This reminds me of "Black Beauty".

I guess you can be friends with yourself, but I still think there must be at least two girls to form a friendship; as I don't think the word "hestevendinde" in that regard covers a girl who is a friend of a horse. I just find that very unlikely.

story about horse-enthusiastic girls and friendship

Sounds right in my ears :-)
If it is flap copy it has to be snappy.
