French term

nivellement (de compte)

French to English Bus/Financial Finance (general) banking
context: consolidation of bank accounts. Here are two examples of use:
"nivellement vers le compte centralisateur des soldes créditeurs (des comptes secondaires)"
"le nivellement, c'est à dire la mise à niveau automatique des comptes secondaires par débit ou crédit de ces comptes".
I have found drawdown as a suggested translation, which would work for the first example above but not for the second. A google search hasn't found any examples of the term levelling (of accounts/account balances).
Thanks

Note to Tom

You changed your post so mine in answer disappeared. Nivellement means to bring down to nothing. Ergo, semantically, zero balancing makes sense. Zero balancing is the GENERIC term for grouping all deposits under one account. It\'s from the point of view of the deposit holder..in order to zero balance, the other accounts are swept [the money is swept out of all the accounts] and they are pooled into one account. It is a technique and NOT The name of an account. There\'s the skinny on that.

disagree Tom Bishop : Zero balancing is a specific type of sweeping. There is insufficient info in the source text to determine whether zero balancing or target balancing is being discussed. Sweeping will cover both options (as will cash balancing).

Wrong, the process is: sweep and pool in order to zero balance. Niveller=to make something nothing...

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks very much for all the information on this ... as regards sweeping vs. zero balancing, my particular document refers to a sweeping service (using the English word sweeping) and then uses the term nivellement when describing the actual process in detail, so zero balancing definitely seems right here. Thanks again ! "

sweep

In the UK, some banks offer a service called a "sweep", where on a certain day each month, the balance of the current account is automatically levelled off at a certain amount, with any surplus funds being transferred to a savings account and any deficit being drawn on a separate overdraft account.
