agree  Ken Cox: In the context, I like this the best. 'Prohibited' and similar terms could suggest that horses are not permitted in the yard (not the intention). Another possibility is 'no passage for horses', but Heidrun's suggestion will yield the desired result.

  -> thanks Kenneth

agree  Klaus Herrmann: Wirkt auch freundlicher...
35 mins
  -> danke Klaus

agree  Steffen Walter: Ein kleines "please" erhöht den Höflichkeitsfaktor: "Horse riders *please* use other entrance". Ergänzen könnte man noch "Thank you for your understanding" (falls das noch auf das Schild passt). // "...for the inconvenience *this may cause*" ;-))

  -> Du hast natürlich recht, und man könnte auch noch schreiben "we apologize for the inconvenience" ;-)

neutral  Cilian O'Tuama: Maybe I'm being overly fussy, but would that not make horse riders arriving by car use the horse entrance?
3 hrs
  -> I don't think so--anyways I didn't like using just "horses" because after all they can't read ;-) Besides I think that in terms of traffic you are what you are doing at any given time: one can be a pedestrian one minute and a driver the next, etc

agree  Nancy Arrowsmith: Horses use other entrance

Use a pictorial sign?

Explanation:
Perhaps you've already considered getting a sign with no words at all - a picture of a rider in a red circle with a red line through it would be understaood in any language.

Explanation:
Just an alternate: an illustratory sign would do just as good
