Die Folge ist eine höhere Belastung bzw. Überlastung des Bauteils und eine schnellere Alterung und Zerstörung des Restquerschnittes. begünstigen - durch technologische Vorgänge (Schweißen, Bohren) bedingte - „Kerbwirkungen“ im Material die Materialermüdung. Der Riss entstand im Bereich des ***Trägersteges*** durch die an der Schweißnaht des Querträgers entstehenden Kerbwirkungen."

I've found several possibilities including girder web, carrier beam and just plain girder, but no clear indication of which one fits the context, and apparently there's a substantial difference between beams and girders, so they are not interchangeable terms.

This is actually for a gravel extraction plant rather than a crane, but they keep drawing analogies to cranes, so any insight from anyone who understands cranes or gravel extraction plants would be much appreciated.

A beam (or girder - the difference is basically one of size, but also material, and there is really no hard and fast rule as to which applies in any situation, though girders will necessarily be steel or concrete while beams can also be wood) generally consists of vertical and horizontal parts, the vertical member(s) being the web(s), the horizontal part(s) the flanges. Traditionally steel beams/girders were separate pieces riveted together, now welded, and these days can be rolled sections. Think of big I beams (flanges top and bottom, web in the middle).

When there are cross members between parallel beams / girders, they are generally welded to the web, as seems to be your case.

I note however that Korchomkin's multilingual dict. of construction and civil engineering gives Trägersteg as 'girder web'. For me that smacks of translatese, 'girder' being unnecessary, certainly when the word is used in its context.
