The 'Slabbing' slider allows the Operator to isolate and view a slab of the bag in any direction.

Slabbing isolates a thin “slab” of the bag or threat image for closer examination.

The Slabbing slider lets you slab through the entire scan image.

CT technology also enables the ability to ‘slice’ the baggage image (also sometimes referred to as 'slabbing') allowing screeners to navigate dynamically inside of the image by removing /adding thin slices from/to it. By doing this the screener reviewing the image is able to target a specific area of the bag, essentially decluttering the image and looking layer by layer, for an unobstructed view.

"Slabbing"

Explanation:
"Slabbing" in English translates as "slabbing" in Dutch because it refers to the specific action of isolating and examining a thin section or slab of an object.

thin “slab” of the bag OR threat image

-->

3. Benefits from implementing CT

3.1 Security Benefits

The predominant security benefit of CT technology is the improved overall detection capabilities with a lower false alarm rate. In addition to the benefits of advanced EDS using CT scanners, the system also produces a 3D image for more effective image analysis by the screener as it becomes easier to identify prohibited items and other weapons contained in passengers cabin baggage.
The screener is able to fully rotate the image for a full 360 view of the bag and its contents in order to make a more informed decision. Furthermore, a number of functions support the operator including the ability to remove items from the bag, cut or “slab/slice” the image along with other functions to manipulate the image for improved analysis. CT is able to generate 3D images by taking a number of 2D radiographic images around a single axis of rotation, hence the rotating gantry within the machines. At London Heathrow Airport, staff that were involved within the pilot projects of CT technology have stated that 3D analysis helps them make better decisions and that after being trained on 3D imagery, they do not want to revert to a traditional X-ray lanes as image analysis becomes more difficult

New Threat Image Projection (TIP) libraries have been developed in conjunction with equipment manufacturers, and the use of TIP will be mandated. Further trials are being used to optimize the integration of the equipment within the overall checkpoint process, refine alarm resolution procedures and develop appropriate training packages. Feedback from both airport security staff and passengers on the CT equipment trials has been extremely positive.

Note to reference poster

Unlike traditional X-ray technology, CT scanners can produce highly detailed 3D images of the contents of carry-on bags.

Unlike the X-ray machines, which require screeners to recognize prohibited items from static 2D images, CT scanners allow screeners to manipulate, rotate, slice, enhance and examine every detail of the item in 3D.

The task of an airport security officer is to visually inspect X-ray images of luggage and take a decision within seconds whether it is a harmful piece of baggage or not. While still many airports conduct security screening with 2D multi-view X-ray imaging technology, newer technology is based on 3D CT imaging and brings along new features such as 360° rotation and slicing through the bag.

Up to this day, security screening of hold baggage at many airports is still being conducted with 2D multiview X-ray imaging technology. Newer technology is based on 3D CT imaging. Such systems offer the possibility to rotate a bag around 360
degrees, slice through a luggage and they provide state-of-the-art explosives detection systems (EDS).

Although 2D imaging technology is still being used for security screening of hold baggage at many airports, newer technology is based on 3D CT imaging (see Figure 1). 3D CT imaging allows screeners to look through an alarmed object by using a slice view.

With 3D imaging, cabin baggage is displayed as 3D rotatable images (Figure 3a). Most systems also provide cross-sectional images (also called slice or slab images, see Figure 3b for an example).

CT scanners have been used in a medical context since the 1970’s, allowing doctors to collect detailed, three-dimensional internal images of a patient’s body using a rotating X-ray tube paired with computerized image reconstruction.
(...)
The devices installed at TF Green operate using similar technology, representing a massive improvement over the two-dimensional X-ray images which the TSA’s current scanners generate. Operators can rotate images, zoom in on them, and even “slice” material out of the picture in order to get a clearer image of what is underneath a layer of packed goods.

'Slicing' luggage
Professor Bowring says some airports also have CT (computed tomography) scanning technology, similar to scanners found in hospitals.

"It 'slices through' the luggage. So if anybody's in any doubt they can take a slice every few millimetres through and have a close look at that."
