  -> I think it means what the French refer to as une association sous la loi de 1901 or 2..can't rememeber.....they use it a lot for that...community groups is too grass roots for this, IMO...:)

Just calling in to comment on Jane's response to my peer comment on her answer.

Yes, indeed, Jane, the term 'associatif' does OFTEN refer specifically to associations under the 'loi de 1901', i.e. basically charities/non-profits.

HOWEVER, it is also commonly in everday use (things like newspaper columns, etc.), and particularly in a context like this where they're talking rather woolly-ly about 'le monde assoc..' to simple refer to clubs, societies, associations, groups... etc. In other contexts, these might be leisure groups, sports clubs, clubs for the elderly etc. But it seems clear here that they are likely to be religious or cultural groups, of the kind that are often referred to as 'community groups' --- the sorts of groups that might reasonably be expected to speak out on behalf of and represent various (minority?) groups within the community. I don't know if the European usage is different here from your Stateside version?
IMO, the fact that a group does or doesn't make a profit really has nothing whatever to do here with the fact that is has responded angrily (etc.) to this racial outrage...
