SOFT benefit. A type of non monetary compensation offered by a business to members of their staff for performing their jobs. Many senior employees are offered a valuable soft benefit or perk like a company car instead of money as part of their overall remuneration.

HARD Benefits, sometimes referred to as 'Direct' or 'Tangible' benefits, are the line items that directly impact P&L. They are typically found as line items in budgets or project plans. Hence, they are 'measurable' and someone can be held accountable for performance

Já em Giaglis, Mylonopoulos & Doukidis (1999), há uma qualificação bem mais ampla dos benefícios, ainda relacionados à adoção de TI. Os benefícios são apresentados como sendo pertencentes a duas categorias, soft e hard. Dentro dos benefícios soft estariam incluídos os benefícios intangíveis e estes benefícios não seriam de fácil expressão em termos quantitativos.

Esta mesma problemática é apresentada mais recentemente por Joshi e Pant (2008) em que a avaliação é dividida em: benefícios decorrentes de TI
facilmente quantificáveis (hard benefits) e benefícios decorrentes de TI
tendencialmente intangíveis e por isso dificilmente quantificáveis (soft benefits).
