agree forli : the screw has a small fibre washer on the inside of e.g. a wall socket or light-switch, which prevents it coming out completely and getting lost.

Thanks, forli. It can also have a threaded part which is bigger around than the hole of the front panel (for example), so that when you unscrew the screws and take the panel off, the screws stay in the panel.
