English term or phrase: yellow jacket
How does one say "yellow jacket" in Spanish? Yellow jackets are carnivorous wasps with black and yellow stripes. Many Americans call the "bees" but actually they are not bees. I don't no if Spanish speakers make a similar mistake calling the "abejas". Nevertheless, any help with a correct Spanish translation is appreciated. Even if I don't VOTE for your answer your answer is still appreciated.

i spent quite some time browsing for this one. i think an adequate and not too literal translation could be "avispa amarilla", based on this excerpt from a web page called "entomología forense" in argentina:

Familia Vespidae
Vespula germanica (L., 1758)

Parte ancha del abdomen truncada en la base, formando una faceta plana. Tórax y abdomen con dibujos amarillos y negros.
Especie europea que está extendiéndose por el sur de Argentina, donde entró desde Chile. En la provincia de Neuquén es conocida como “avispa amarilla” y también como “chaqueta amarilla”, traducción literal de su nombre inglés “yellow jacket”.
Algunas avispas solitarias de la familia Bombicidae presentan una coloración negra y amarilla similar, pero por su comportamiento no es probable que aparezcan sobre cadáveres (sensu Oliva 1997)

Explanation:
I think is a type of avispa (wasp) vespula germánica. In many web pages they translate the term as avispa chaqueta amarilla although the common term in Spain is "avispa". Maybe technically is incorrect since they are a specific type of avispa, but that's the way we refer to them.

agree  MJ Barber: I think Spanish people would just call it 'avispa'. If you need the technical term then go for the vespula germánica, but otherwise, it would just be avispa
