German term

Die Rippenknorpel schneiden sich weich

German to English Medical Medical (general) Post-mortem report
I am unsure whether this is 'the rib cartilage cuts easily', or 'the costal cartilages intersect gently'
I know sich schneiden can be translated as 'intersect', particularly in geometry, but what about in this case?

Discussion

Teangacha (X) Jun 8, 2020:
I definitely think it is referring to cutting through the costal cartilage. 'Costal cartilage' seems to be used more frequently than rib cartilage when referring to autopsies. If the autopsy is being performed on a child, then this would explain why the cartilage is soft, as with an elderly person the cartilage is not as soft, and different instruments are used so as to cut through it.

The costal cartilage can be cut through easily

This chest is opened during an autopsy by disarticulating both of the sternoclavicular joints and cutting through the anterior aspect of the ribs or costal cartilages
