This is actually a content on the use of a treadmill (Philips) in healthcare.

'Grade' usually refers to ground level — or in this case, the belt level. Is this one of those machines that gradually increase the incline, so you find yourself running up hill? Is this what the 'GS' mode is? If so, I could imagine that 'grade return' would in some way reset the machine to level...
