2.1.4 Synchronous/Asynchronous Design
Synchronous design should be the preferred method over asynchronous design because asynchronous design often depends on element delays which are difficult to predict and verify. Synchronous logic design coupled with static timing analysis provides a reliable method to verify the hardware design timing. It also provides a good overall assurance of robust timing, since simulation methods always face pragmatic limits regarding assurance that all functions are actually tested and that all delay paths have been stimulated. Synchronous logic design also provides a benefit of design reuse issues, including parts, obsolescence issues that require migration of the design to a newer generation device or possibly to a totally different type from the original target device.
