Using glutamate receptor agonist ibotenate, Marret et al demonstrated that NMDA receptor excitotoxicity could arrest neural migration in a developing hamster brain. They found intracortical and molecular layer heteropias, subcortical and intrac- ortical arrest of migration, and ectopias in the molecular layer of the neocortex.
