Spanish term

adquirir la nacionalidad por concesión

Spanish to English Law/Patents Certificates, Diplomas, Licenses, CVs
Hi,

This appears as a margin note on a marriage certificate from Spain to say that the husband has subsequently acquired Spanish nationality.

I am not sure how to translate "por concesión" here.

It appears in the following sentence: "El marido ha adquirido la nacionalidad española por CONCESION, en fecha XXX, según consta en el tomo XXX"

I am translating into UK English.

Many thanks for your help.

acquire nationality by (discretionary and concessionary) grant

... by virtue of the marriage itself, residency or or being an outstanding sportsman, athlete (remember the South African runner, Zola Budd), writer or (operatic) singer - as in many other countrie. It's unclear from the context.
Example sentence:

'Spanish nationality can be acquired by naturalisation, which is given only at the discretion of the government through a Royal Decree, and under exceptional circumstances, for example to notable individuals.'

Peer comment(s):

agree Adolfo Fulco : Sí, hay muchas formas de adquirir la ciudadanía o nacionalidad. No me arriesgaría a decir "naturalisation" como otros proponen.

Gracias de nuevo and thanks de novo! Remember the Brazilian footballer who had been 'fast-tracked' to Spanish nationality by 'concession' vs. naturalisation - and catapulted forthwith into the Spanish national soccer squad.

acquire nationality by naturalisation

If indeed "concesión" is equivalent to "naturalisation" (a fact I haven't been able to pin down even after looking at the relevant Spanish government websites).
Careful with confusing "citizenship" and "nationality". The two, while obviously having some overlap, have distinct meanings.

The approval of article 11 of the constitution was somewhat controversial, mostly due to the possible confusion it would cause with the term "nationalities", in reference to those communities or regions in Spain with a special historical and cultural identity, a term that had been used in the second article of the constitution. It was suggested that article 11 should substitute the term "nationality" for "citizenship", but it was considered, as it is common in other legislations in Europe and Latin America, that the terms were not synonymous.

United States nationality law defines some persons born in U.S. outlying possessions as U.S. nationals but not citizens. British nationality law defines six classes of British national, among which "British citizen" is one class (having the right of abode in the United Kingdom, along with some "British subjects"). Similarly, in the Republic of China, commonly known as Taiwan, the status of national without household registration applies to people who have Republic of China nationality, but do not have an automatic entitlement to enter or reside in the Taiwan Area, and do not qualify for civic rights and duties there. Under the nationality laws of Mexico, Colombia, and some other Latin American countries, nationals do not become citizens until they turn 18.
