“筋”在机械工程上的意思是起加强作用的物件，如筋板、筋条。英语称为reinforced panel, reinforced bar 等。
所谓”压筋”是指在材料上压出花纹或凹凸形状而起到加强的作用。在不同的情况下“压筋”宜翻译成不同的词。在车库门这种情况下，表面压筋成型实际就是指压花成型，即”embossed press molding”.
