French term

distribution/répartition

French to English Science Mathematics & Statistics analysis of study results
I am aware that this pair has appeared before but in a tangible example involving bubbles!

A distinction is made between the two terms, even though one often considers them to be synonymous. The first is applied to quantitative variables and the second to qualitative variables (both segments reproduced below).

My logic is that 'distribution' refers to the continuous spread of data from the lowest to highest value, whereas 'répartition' is categorisation.

Discussion

Thomas Miles (asker) Oct 31, 2018:
Interlingual searches on Wikipedia Just be careful using the interlingual function on Wikipedia - depending on the language some articles may merge entries, or provide more specific individual articles.
chris collister Oct 31, 2018:
This was a new one for me, but Wiki makes it clear that a fonction de répartition is a cumulative distribution function, as opposed to a probability density function. The former is the integral of the latter. But without more context, it's hard to understand how or why these particular variables are "qualitative"
Thomas Miles (asker) Oct 31, 2018:
Agreed, Phil, and my role is unfortunately to transmit this same meaninglessness.
philgoddard Oct 31, 2018:
The French is meaningless because they've just put these two words in brackets with no connection to the rest of the sentence.
