This is a question asked on an application for life insurance. It's easy to understand the meaning, but what is the proper term?

You have to be careful with the French meaning here. "En nom propre" does not mean "sole ownership". A couple can purchaase a property "en nom propre". The term "nom propre" simply means in one's own name, rather than setting up an SCI, for example.It is therfore incorrect to say that "en nom propre" means "sole ownsership". I am not certain of the US terminology for this, but I am certain of th meaning of the French - which is the first thing to get right in order to provide an accurate rendering.

neutral  Daryo: well, if it's done trough an SCI, then technically what is "owned" is not the bricks and land but the SCI, and if there is only one owner then ... + "avoirs" could be anything, including paintings, horses, own or inherited "droits d'auteur" etc...

  -> Whatever the asker choses for "bien" in this case is up to her. Assets is a possible solution. However, the "nom propre" does not have the meaning of "sole ownership": it means owned in one's own name - one or more individuals.

if "en communauté" means owned by BOTH spouses [no doubts possible about that] then "en nom propre" means for the purpose of this list owned ONLY by the spouse applying for this life insurance (i.e. the applicant is the sole owner of someassets - that could some property, but also anything else of value!)
