Spanish term

Primitivas sólidas, huecas y secundarias.

Spanish to English Medical Medical: Dentistry Dentistry degree
Hello all,

I am translating some of the subjects for the Dentistry degree in Mexico. They are only titles, so there is not a lot of context. They are the name of the subjects they have to study. Speaking about Basic lesions of the oral mucosa, there is another subject called:

Primitivas sólidas, huecas y secundarias.

I know primitivas is "primitives" and I could say Solid, hollow and secondary primitives. But does it sound right? I havent found any source that can confirm this is correct.

Many thanks!!

@Helena I like the look of that!
James Peel Sep 4, 2017:
@Helena Yes, that is my understanding - but what do we say rather than "hollow", which doesn't seem to exist with lesions?
Helena Chavarria Sep 4, 2017:
@James 'Hollow' primary lesions contain fluid. 'Solid' primary lesions don't.
James Peel Sep 4, 2017:
@Charles I think you are absolutely right - lesions in dentistry are categorised as primary and secondary - but "hollow primary lesions" does not seem to appear anywhere. I wonder whether "encapsulated lesions" might be the term? Here is a fairly comprehensive breakdown of the primary and secondary lesions; most of the primaries seem to be solid, but there is reference to cysts which are "encapsulated" and have a fluid or gaseous filling. There are others which are not described as solid and are filled with fluid, but these are not named as "encapsulated" either, so I'm not really sure...

@Pamela Are you sure about "primitives" in English? I can't find any support for it. I think primitivas means lesiones primitivas and that this means primary lesions: solid primary lesions, hollow primary lesions (though that expression doesn't seem to occur) and secondary lesions.

Solid and fluid-filled primary lesions, and secondary lesions

Flat primary lesions – macule, patch
Raised primary lesions – papule, nodule, plaque (flat raised area)
Fluid filled primary lesions – vescicle and bullae (clear fluid), pustule (white/yellow cloudy fluid)
Secondary lesions – erosion, ulceration, excoriation, fissure, scar, hyper or hypopigment

agree Charles Davis : Yes, I think that is the solution to "huecas". Well done!

I think that 'primitivas' is 'primary' in English.

The translation would be something like 'solid and hollow primary lesions and secondary lesions', though I'm not completely sure if 'solid' and 'hollow' are the right terms.

I have a feeling that 'hueca' could be the same as 'líquida'.

Lesiones primarias sólidas
Roncha, pápula, nódulo, goma y nudosidad

Lesiones primarias líquidas
Vesícula, ampolla, pústula, absceso y quiste

It appears that primary lesions include both 'solid' and 'hollow/liquid' (like blisters).

Primary Lesion - A primary lesion is directly associated with the disease process and is described with established dermatological terminology. Identifying the primary lesion(s), whenever possible, is the first step towards identification of the disease or cutaneous process. Primary lesions include the macule, papule, patch, plaque, vesicle, bulla, nodule, tumor, wheal, and pustule. Secondary lesions are a modification of primary lesions.
