A definite increase is defined as a 50% (and at least 1 cm) increase as measured by the sum of the products of the cross-diameters of the lesion.

for the term <εγκαρσια > to be justified in this context, IMO the author should have made this clear by using the term "transverse" cross d. But I am no expert in the field.
