Если посмотреть примеры этой в Гугле, то у меня создается впечатление примерно такого ее значения: рисковать из-за невыгодного положения, рисковать, попадая (оказавшись или стая себя) в не очень выгодной позиции (например, когда ты по тем или иным причинам вынужден сильно повышать цены, хуже оформляя свой товар, в обстоятельствах трудности доставки и т.п. Но иногда идя на риск худшего, ты можешь значительно выиграть впоследствии. Вот такой последний случай проглядывается в данной переводимой ситуации, по-моему.
