Meet Dolores Price. She's thirteen, wise-mouthed but wounded, having bid her childhood good-bye.

What does it mean by "bid her childhood good-bye"?

she grew up too fast

she is wise-mouthed (has an answer to everything with an attitude) but wounded (has been hurt emotionally)

she pretends to be hardened and callous but she is actually sensitive and hurting

she said goodbye to her childhood way too early (probably referring to her experiences with the opposite sex and possibly drugs, maybe even living on the street)

not really sure

thanks, James :-)
agree jerrie : I think this is spot on - Dolores had to grow up too fast to deal with everything.

She just became a woman

She is no longer a child. Just had her first period. Just became a woman

agree Jean-Luc Dumont : could be but there are other ways to lose your childhood early - loss of a parent, drugs or alcoholism in the family, unhappiness

having said "goodbye" to her childhood

To bid someone farewell is to say, "farewell" to the person, to part with that person. Childhood, in this sentence, is spoken of as though it were a person.

agree chica nueva : Old-fashioned - to give a greeting to someone or to ask someone to do something eg I must now bid you farewell ( = say goodbye to you). Literary - eg She bade her hopes farewell (= She stopped being hopeful) Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary

can be too much hardship and suffering

the loss of a mother for a child who takes over and suddenly has to raise younger siblings

can be seeing a lot of pain and suffering around her, in her family or neighborhood

being confronted to very tough living conditions

does not have to be linked to sex or periods or loo of virginity

loss - sorry
Peer comment(s):

agree J. Leo (X) : you´re describing ´parentification´, when a child prematurely takes on more emotional and practical responsibility. This is from Wally Lamb´s "She´s Come Undone", her mother had anxiety, Dolores became overweight.

being an adult

she's an adult in the way she is portrayed (wise-mouthed), through her experiences (wounded). She left her childhood ways, though not necessarily of her own will. Inother words "grown up" at such a young age.
