Discussion

Colette Kinsella (asker) Sep 13, 2016:
Typo This is the word as it appeared in the text. But yes, perhaps it is a typo.

Thanks.
Steffen Walter Sep 13, 2016:
Looks like a typo ... ... for 'silanisieren/Silanisierung' - see https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silanisierung

Please make sure to enter the correct term in the glossary when you close this question - thank you.

silanization

As both colleagues understood.

"Silanization of oxidized silicon and aluminum surfaces with functionalized silanes with characterization by wettability, ellipsometry, XPS and quartz crystal microbalance studies"
http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/01666622928...

"Silanization is the covering of a surface through self-assembly with organofunctional alkoxysilane molecules. Mineral components like Mica, glass and metal oxide surfaces can all be silanized, because they contain hydroxyl groups which attack and displace the alkoxy groups on the silane thus forming a covalent -Si-O-Si- bond. The goal of silanization is to form bonds across the interface between mineral components and organic components present in paints, adhesives, etc. Silanization (or siliconization) of glassware increases its hydrophobicity and is used in cell culturing to reduce adherence of cells to flask walls
