Contresens ! Je ne revendique rien, ni les points ni l'attribution de la meilleure réponse, seulement la reconnaissance que dire que les constructeurs en général et Ford , en particulier, définissent comme norme de qualité un lubrifiant de boîte de vitesses automatique qui favorise des passages de rapports "brutaux" quand j'ai fourni une multitude de références qui prouvent le contraire ("smooth shifting"), c'est un CONTRESENS évident !

The inflexible connotation of the "hard and fast" location, when applied in a mechanics context means that every gear shift is firmly engaged but not definitive as the early literal synonym that you have found could lead us to misinterprete. If the automatic gearbox operation is "inflexible", "definite", "rigid", "immutable", then how could the shifting be possible ? ! The gearbox could simply not work ! As I have pointed it out in my explanations, the "hard and fast" location came from the sailing area and qualified the firmly and in a steadily pace executed manoeuvres of a ship's crew to handle the ropes, the sails and the other components of the ship. That's exactly the way an automatic gearbox should work : with every new gear firmly engaged but in a steady and homogenous pace, i.e. in a fluid pace. In French, this pace corresponds to the expression "dans un rythme homogène et fluide, sans à coup, le contraire de rythme composé de passages secs des rapports."

OTOH I've never heard "hard and fast" used in a way that would suggest some kind of fluidity or flexibility, on the contrary "solidly anchored" would be more like it!

@Daryo Dobbar dan Daryo. I understand your dificulty to dig the connotation of the "hard and fast" location in an ATF transmission oil features description context. That's why I have seek for its etymology. I found out that this expression has emerged from the sailing area. When a ship was firmly atached with her ropes, she was attached "hard and fast". Which meant that the ropes had been unfolded and handled in a dynamic -yet not harsh-but smooth and accurate way. It's this connotation that the automotive area professionals adopted for the description of manual gearboxes first, then of automatic tr ones. A variant of his location has been adopted much later in the airplane area: Fasten your seatbelts! It is also an operation which requires a firmly locking of the seatbelt but with accurate and fluid movements as well. That's how the meaning of this location has finally evolved in this direction: accurate, dynamic and smooth.

Boîte auto Il existe des BA qui donnent l'impression de patiner et d'autres où les engrènements paraissent plus nets, comme une vraie boîte manuelle. J'imagine que l'accent est mis là-dessus.

On peut dire passer une vitesse d'où le mot "passages". Je pense qu'on peut dire aussi changer de vitesse. "Changements" est bon aussi.
Pour ce qui est de "hard and fast", je pense que c'est tout simplement "difficile et rapide".

je vois mal la "brutalité" ou la "difficulté" d'une opération comme un mode opératoire normal, bien que "hard and fast" est probablement à prendre au sens littéral - (pas grand chose à voir avec "hard and fast rules")

hard = plutôt: décisif/sans hésitation
fast = mouvement rapide /sec

- In an engineering context, when referring to an automatic gerabox, we know that the most common inconvenient of hhe early models was the unstbable operation because the variators were mechanical thus too sensitive towards the engine speed and torque. Whilst nowadays the torque variators are electronic hence much more accurate and capablle of fixing the shifted gears instead of changing too often.

- Une simple lecture des références susmentionnées nous amène à constater que tous les constructeurs, tels Scania ou fabricants d'huiles de transmission, tels Motul, Lucas etc. mettent l'accent sur un passage des rapports en douceur ou fluidité et avec précision. C'est le contraire d'un passage "sec" ou "brutal" !!!

La locution anglaise "hard and fast" nous estvenue du champ lexical de la navigation. Elle se référait à un arrimage sûr et solide du navire. Dès le début du XIXème siècle, nous observons ses peremiers emplois en connotation ("au sens figuré" on disait autrefois) dans le sens de quelque chose qui est stable, ou solidement et préciément fixé et, par extension, dans le domaine juridique, d'une règle rigoureuse et incotestable.

Alors, quelle est la connotation de cette locution figée dans le domaine des transmissions automatiques ? Le problème principal des constructeurs à l'époque des premières boîtes automatiques résidait dans le passage des rapporrts qui était justement sec, saccadé, imprécis et instable. Les amateurs des voitures américaines des années 50-60 ont pu en faire l'expérience. Surtout en pacours urbain, en raison des fluctuations considérables du régime moteur et des variations de couple qui en résultent. Car la gestion des tarnsmissions automatiques de cette époque était mécanique par le biais d'un variateur de couple. Le garnd constructeur Néeralndais DAF avait conçu une solution ingénieuse sosu forme d'un variateur de couple qui fonctionnait en permanence et était doté d'une courroie élastique quiréduisait les frictions. C'était le fameux système Variomatic, monté sur les Dafodil 33, DAF 44 et DAF 55 Marathon à moteur Renault.

Cependant, malgré ces améliorations, le problème de l'imprécision et des à-coups n'était pas vraiment résolu. C'est le cosntructeur allemand ZF, connu pour son implication dans lles courses autombiles qui a apporté les premières vériatables solutions à ce problème avec le module de commande électronique de la transmission (transmission electronic control unit) En effet, l'extrême précision du suivi du régime moteur et du couple moteur permettait au module d'étager le passage des rapports avec plus d'équilibre et plus de souplesse tout en maintenant les rapports engagés de manière stable. Aujurd'hui encore, ce sont les objectifs des normes constructeur telles que l'on les retrouve dans le cahier des charges de al norme FORD.
