Spanish term
CAVA DE PARAJE CUALIFICADO
Spanish to English
Art/Literary
Wine / Oenology / Viticulture
This is an interesting one. This term has not been established yet, and we have a chance to come up with a good English version before by sheer repetition a bad one becomes accepted.
The Spanish wine industry is mulling over a new idea, the CAVA DE PARAJE CUALIFICADO. The idea is to do something similar to what the French have done with the name champagne, to build a protected brand. The word they are stressing is "paraje", which I think is supposed to convey a sense of value, elegance, tradition etc. I think it has to be applicable to an area of any size, from a single estate to a larger area. Right now I have QUALIFIED CAVA AREA, which conveys not much of anything. So I guess I'm looking for an "elevated" word for area, to steal a food term.
TIA!

I found this link, not sure if you feel this is one of the "bad ones"?

You´re welcome Ben. I also agree with Charles comment about the difference between "cualificada" and "calificada" - this example would seem to cover the correct interpretation.

Note from asker:
Actually that changes everything. The description I read was much more open-ended in the interpretation of paraje, but this is very clear that it's talking about single estate (château). Thanks! :) |
