Discussion

Janine Roberts (X) Mar 18, 2016:
"unclean" bill of lading I see now that some additions have been made to David's entry to this effect. Sorry for missing that!
Janine Roberts (X) Mar 18, 2016:
"unclean" bill of lading At one time I worked in shipping and you would normally seek to obtain a clean bill of lading for goods shipped. As the link below shows this means that the goods have been received without any damage.
When negotiating letters of credit it is a normal requirement to have a "clean bill of lading" in order to comply with the terms of the letter of credit.
Clearly if there is damage it would not be possible to issue such a "clean" bill of lading and it would be an "unclean or claused bill of lading" as shown in the link. The entire phrase "unrein Frachtbrief" should really have been in the entry.

Mack Tillman Mar 18, 2016:
@David You should give David H. the credit. Seems he needs it.
David Williams (asker) Mar 18, 2016:

David Williams (asker) Mar 18, 2016:
I found the following definition in German: "Unreines Konnossement (Foul B/L): Ein B/L gilt als unrein, wenn negative Vermerke, sogenannte Abschreibungen, über die äußere Beschaffenheit und die Verpackung der Ware im B/L aufgenommen wurden."

Jonathan MacKerron Mar 17, 2016:
improperly completed consignment note another possibility
Wendy Streitparth Mar 17, 2016:
I think it means that the goods were damaged, but don't know what one would say in English.
David Williams (asker) Mar 17, 2016:
I'm thinking along the lines of "incorrectly"

Claused Bill of Lading
A bill of lading indicating some damage to, or loss of, a good during transport. A bill of lading is a document in which the parties agree to ship a good to a certain location, and also serves as the receipt upon arrival at the destination. Most banks or other institutions financing the shipment refuse to accept or honor claused bills of lading, which means that sellers often have difficulty receiving payment on them. It is also called a dirty bill of lading. See also: Clean bill of lading.
