The chief advantage of this is that the doctor or the nurse does not have to spend time threading the suture on the needle, which may be difficult for very fine needles and sutures. Also, the suture end of a swaged needle is narrower than the needle body, eliminating drag from the thread attachment site. La variedad de agujas de uso más frecuente se puede clasificar en rectas y curvas, con filo o sin filo. Las rectas con filo se usan en la sutura de piel y son manejadas directamente por las manos del cirujano. Las agujas curvas necesitan el empleo de portaagu-ja para su manipulación. La aguja curva con filo se usa también en la piel y las curvas sin filo para planos musculoaponeuróticos y en general, en los tejidos de planos profundos. La curvatura de la aguja puede ser circular o de medio círculo y la punta se puede presentar de forma triangular y punta de diamante, que facilita su penetración en cartílagos, periostio y tejido óseo. Existen también agujas que traen acoplados el material de sutura en la extremidad contraria de la punta (sutura atraumática), denominada así porque no se produce el doblez del hilo de sutura en el ojo de la aguja, disminuyendo el trauma en el tejido a su paso.
