I realise this has been translated elsewhere as 'security deposit' but my context is quite different (report on investing regulations + dangers of speculative financial instruments for retail investors)

Asker does not seem to have understood the issue at hand. The point is not that investors need a security deposit in case the FI (financial intermediary) they are dealing with go bankrupt.

On the contrary, the point is that investors should know about the 'mécanisme de garantie' in case of the said FI going under. This mechanism is in fact a deposit insurance. It guarantees that investors will be refunded in part or in whole should their FIs go under. In the US, it is the FDIC that provides deposit insurance to the banking sector, as explained in the link below.

I ruled out 'security deposit' precisely because it doesn't work here. I mentioned it merely to indicate I had looked in the Proz glossary. Thanks.
