'Knowledge contest' would probably be good for some contexts, but I think it's a tad too general. My understanding is that they specifically refer to 'olympiads' in/on pretty much any school subject, be it any of the science disciplines, the Slovak language, etc. In fact, it's a pretty big thing at many primary/elementary schools (not quite sure about secondary/high schools), and quite a few kids join at least one of the 'olympiads', obviously as long as their grades are up to snuff. After they make it through the school-level round, they can go on and qualify for city, regional, national, etc. olympiads (you get the picture). I realise that the word 'olympiad' may well look weird, yet it is used, even on countless British and U.S. websites.

Thank you for the info. "Olympiad" is not a particularly familiar word - it wasn't part of my school experience in the UK - but I can see that it's used sometimes (perhaps originally it was associated mainly with chess).
