English term or phrase: sit grades
She quit piano lessons when the teacher wanted her to sit grades.

This is from a British article about child prodigies. It must be a British expression, and I understand that "to sit" means to take exams, so "to sit grades" seems like it would mean taking a test at the end of each grade? But it doesn't make sense as the girl is extremely smart, and taking a test should be a breeze for her. So I am wondering if it has another meaning. Or maybe simply that she wants to step up sooner than the average student, so just studying for a grade-specific exam at the end of each year is too slow. Does that make sense?

Explanation:
