Medical - Medical (general) / Bone Marrow Aspiration
Spanish term or phrase: forage
"Realizar al paciente un forage de descompresión de diámetro 7 mm, ayudado por una aguja kirsner, hasta la cabeza femoral."

"Introducir la cánula en el interior del forage y empujar con el embolo la matriz ósea a medida que se extrae la trafina."

From a text about bone marrow aspiration, mainly. I can't make head or tail of the word "forage" and can't find a translation for it anywhere. TIA for any light you can shed on it.

core decompression; forage channel
Explanation:
For the first use I suggesting using the name of the procedure: "perform a 7 mm diameter core decompression" you don't need to worry about "forage".
And for the second instance I might say: "insert the cannula inside the forage channel and push...."

OSTEONECROSIS OF THE FEMORAL HEAD: FREE VASCULARISED FIBULAR GRAFTING VS. CORE DECOMPRESSION (FORAGE BIOPSY)
We used core decompression (forage biopsy) in 39 cases and in the other 15 cases free vascularised fibular grafting (microsurgical techniques). All the patients were at the initial stages of the condition (Steinberg I–IIIa), stages in which subchondral collapse had not yet occurred. Follow up average 125.6 months.

Thanks Neil. I ended up using both those suggested phrases. So it's a French word - no wonder I couldn't find it in any of the Spanish dictionaries! Even so though, I wouldn't have guessed at the "core decompression" meaning. So many thanks for that - appreciate your help.

(decompression) drill hole

Explanation:
"forage" is French and being used here as a loan word for a drill hole (as in drilling a well to access underground water). There is no single medical word in English for it and a gloss will do fine. Neil's suggestion of a CHANNEL is perfectly acceptable as well.

Core Decompression for Avascular Necrosis
Aetna considers core decompression medically necessary for the treatment of early/pre-collapse (stage I or II; before X-ray changes are evident) avascular necrosis of the hip (femoral head and/or neck).
In more severe conditions, the necrotic bone is decompressed and debrided, through a cortical window at the head-neck junction.

What is core decompression and how do you do it?
Also called 'forage' this procedure is typically used to decompress the hypertensive head by creating a hole extending till necrotic area. This often gives immediate pain relief. It can be done as an:
- Isolated procedure or
- With adjuvant...
- With bone grafting (non-vascularized / vascularized)
Hungerford technique: Using Jewett nail starter (12mm) Ficat (modified) - 10mm window with 8mm central core made by Michele trephine and two additional channels made by 5 - 6 mm trephine.

Reference: Orthopedic forage procedure

Reference information:
Surgical options in the Adult Lower Extremity Joint Reconstruction Clinic include:
Microdrilling or forage procedures for areas that have not gone on to collapse- Microdrilling or Forage Procedure (sometimes also called Core Decompression) can sometimes be considered during the early stages of osteonecrosis prior to collapse of bone. Once collapse occurs a patient is no longer considered a candidate for this procedure. The idea behind this treatment method is to decrease pain. It does not cure the disease.
