French term

tableau

French to English Tech/Engineering Ships, Sailing, Maritime Motorboat specifications
Hello again,
Another extract from boat specifications. I gather that échelle de bain is swim ladder but not sure about tableau in this context. Could it be the tableau de bord? Thanks for any input!

And thanks again for the enlightenment and all the links.
Tony M Jan 24, 2015:
@ Asker Glad we're all on the same... wavelength (groan!) :-)
Anne Greaves (asker) Jan 24, 2015:
Yes that occurred to me as well, which is why I had decided that your answer was more likely!
Tony M Jan 24, 2015:
@ Asker Yes, but you have to ask yourself, first of all, is your 'tableau de bord' EVER referred to anywhere else as 'tableau' tout court? On a boat, the 'tableau' is usually the 'tableau arrière' by default unless otherwise specified; and in the logic of things, what would a bathing ladder be doing 'encastré' under the dashboard? Doesn't really make a lot of sense!
Anne Greaves (asker) Jan 24, 2015:
Yes I noticed your suggestion Tony and think you're probably right. But tableau de bord features quite heavily in the text which is why I thought it might be control panel/dashboard
Tony M Jan 23, 2015:
@ Asker Well, that's the part I'd disagree most with! In all the thousands of words of translations I've done for various types of pleasure craft, I have never seen 'tableau' (without further qualification) used for a 'control panel' — other than, for example, an electrical switch panel.

I have, however, seen it countless times to refer to a specific part of the deck/hull structure — usually as 'tableau arrière'.

As I say, in order to get these terms right (as they are often used in quite imprecise ways!), you really owe it to yourself to get hold of a picture of exactly what this boat looks like.
Anne Greaves (asker) Jan 23, 2015:
Thanks to all. I was actually agreeing with the "fitting under the control panel" bit rather than "accommodation ladder". Have stuck with swim ladder. But it's tableau I need to clarify.
philgoddard Jan 23, 2015:
An accommodation ladder is the kind of thing you see on a big ship.
Tony M Jan 23, 2015:
@ Asker No, I'm sorry, it's not that at all!

An echelle de bain is a bathing ladder, nothing to do with an accommodation ladder (déscente, e.a.)

And the tableau may be the transom, although the fact that this ladder stows underneath it rather suggests they may be referring to the stern deck itself.

It would be really helpful for you to see a picture of this craft.
Anne Greaves (asker) Jan 23, 2015:
Thanks Evgeny had come to that conclusion
Evgeny Artemov (X) Jan 23, 2015:
Sounds like "accommodation ladder" fitting under the console / control panel / dash board / dial panel / display board / instrumentation panel

Here's some pictures

You can't see the ladder, but I'm sure it leads down from that little flat bit at the stern, which looks like it might have padded seats.
