ST

English to Spanish Other Botany
En un manual sobre un carrete portamangueras, en la sección del fluido hidráulico del acumulador: No encuentro el significado de ST:

Ingestion:...
Inhalation:...
Aspiration: It depends on viscosity. Above 40C and below 70C. *ST* is highly hazardous and can cause pneumonitis. At higher viscosities and low temperature the risk is only slight.

JohnMcDove Jan 22, 2015:
If this is a typo, as Robin notes and sustains, then, fine. But I'd check with the client + get further context. Steam, referring to vapor (in this context) is a "a combination of a vaporized substance and air". Nothing more complex. The simplicity of the matter is that is giving what to do if you ingest it (liquid) or if the substance goes into your body in a "gaseous" state...
Vero G. Martinez (asker) Jan 20, 2015:
Sorry about "Botany", I didn't change that.
Vero G. Martinez (asker) Jan 20, 2015:
It is from a hose reel cart manual.

10.6 COSHH
The equipment shall be operated taking account of the COSHH regulations. In the case of hydraulic equipment these normally relate to the system fluid, which in the majority of cases, will be a mineral oil. In the case of synthetic or fire resistant fluids the manufacturer of the particular fluid should be consulted for COSHH information since fluid types and hazards vary widely. All manufacturers of hydraulic fluids now produce information leaflets on each type
of their product, will full COSHH requirements.

Although hydraulic mineral oils contains various additives, mineral oils can be considered to be the most hazardous component – there is no significant health hazard when properly used.

Ingestion - Only slight oral toxicity – do not induce vomiting due to risk of ingestion – administer half a pint of milk and seek medical
attention.

Aspiration - It depends on viscosity. Above 40C and below 70C. ST is highly hazardous and can cause pneumonitis. At higher viscosities and low temperature the risk is only slight. If aspiration occurs, admit to hospital immediately requesting an ambulance with oxygen facilities.

@Asker This is in the field of 'botany'?

cSt

There's a typo in the source text

below 70C. ST is highly hazardous
should read:
below 70cSt is highly hazardous

where cSt is a unit of measurement of kinematic viscosoty, (the centistoke), named after George Gabriel Stokes http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viscosity

The (corrected) unit of measurement will remain the same in the Spanish translation.

Peer comment(s):

neutral Jennifer Levey : Any refs to back up ST = ¿steam'? Steam is associated biunivocally with water, but the ST is clearly talking about hydraulic fluid.//You're utterly wrong about 'steam' - it's aqueous only. Regardless: you might want to take a look at my revised answer.

Hi Robin, I think Veronica needs to check with her client, but ST is a noun here, referring to the fluid, in this case «vaporized fluid». "Steam" can refer to any vaporized fluid. In context, is the only way I can make any sense. /../See discussion.
