Head or Commander of ground operations I would tend to agree with Duncan (not to mention my 4 years of active duty in the US Army). As an alternative to ground operations, you could also use ground troops or ground forces.

Would something along the lines of "leader, ground operations" make any sense?

As a captain he's would have had a command role at some level or another, but at which in this operation?
