This is from a corporate document describing the nature of a private medical service provided to a major construction project in Asia. The particular section describes some of the procedures involved in the adminstration of pharmaceutical products. The complete phrase is: "Las pomadas de uso oftalmológico tipo 'pomada oculoepitelizante' se entregarán al paciente en envase completo para prevenir contagios debido a que su administración no deja margen de seguridad suficiente"

I'm having trouble finding a term which is neither too vague (eye ointment) nor too specific (aciclovir eye ointment).

From a medical point of view, ...re-epithelialization of the cornea by means of an eye ointment is not feasible, because corneal epithelial cells can barely regenerate. The only way to re-establish the corneal epithelium is by means of a transplant. <br />The AEMPS reference you mentioned below, lists one single preparation, approved in 1956 (as far as I understand), which is composed of vitamins and methionin, i.e., substances which may potentially support cellular regeneration in a very general sense. <br />But I doubt if there is whole class of re-epithelialization medications in any country or pharmacopoia.

It's interesting that the term "re-epithelization/re-epithelialization" exists (I wasn't aware of it), but I note that there are no results for "re-epithelialization ointment" whereas "pomada oculos epitelizante" seems to be in relatively wide use. It appears on the AEMP website as a type of ointment: http://www.aemps.gob.es/cima/especialidad.do?metodo=verPresentaciones&codigo=25908

agree Anne Schulz : a literal translation seems to be ok - see discussion entry above (I don't find more than a few dozen hits on "pomada oculoepitelizante", none of which seem to be from a medical or scientific source)
