Yes, I'm sure you are right - the last couple of references I found seem to confirm that (even "bring your own orchids and succulents") - although, someone has to plant those floral decorations in parks and gardens as well :-)

After ploughing through the Web looking for and at Pflanzungen, I'm almost certain that it will be "container planting" (artistic/creative/decorative/ornamental or something similar)

I think you are on the right track, though it's probably containers that are planted/arranged according to various themes (herbs, succulents, ...)

The asker found one definition of "Pflanzung" in Wikipedia and asked us all if it is right in the context of a competition between florists - that is context enough.

There is another meaning, which is used by florists, as a number (if not all) of my references indicate - in gardens and in containers/pots/troughs or whatever of all kinds.

As ornamental flower beds are "Pflanzungen", this is a perfectly valid answer - as are my other (validated) alternatives.

If you take a moment or two to take a look at the references I posted, you will see that Pflanzung is not exclusively what Wikipedia says it is - it can be in beds (Rabatte) or in containers of all kinds (Gefäße) - the point is that the plants are growing, not cut.

The simplest Pflanzung I can think of here in Germany is one of those "Lucky Clovers" in a pot with a chimney sweep on a stick.

It may well also be the decorative planting of pots, vases, containers as well as floral borders/beds or whatever - it definitely isn't flower arranging/floral arrangements (Gestecke). I just posted a spate of references under my answer.

You haven't really explained what this competition is, but if it's between florists, I would assume it's flower arranging and has nothing to do with flower beds. Florists work with cut flowers.
What are the other disciplines?

You quote Wikipedia and there it says "Tätigkeit" - "ornamental flower beds" are not a Tätigkeit.

The other Wikipedia definition for Pflanzung (Rabatte) is:

Which I would call a "decorative border" - as you would see at the Chelsea Flower Show for example. Seems far more likely with reference to florists.

The key word here is florists - I'm reasonably certain that Pflanzung is not about planting out seedlings to grow mature plants (mature enough for selling), which is what gardeners and horticulturalists do, but more about "Pflanzung" as, for example, a flower bed or a decorative arrangement of growing plants to show the creative skills of a florist.
