Portuguese term

banco

Portuguese to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature historical archive, bibliographic reference
Hi all

this is in a footnote citing the source of information (in this case a historical archive). It is referred to here:

Ocorrências numerosas em Arquivo Histórico da X, Série D, banco 8, livros 3 e 4

could this be 'stacks' or something similar? Or could it be a reference to a database? All help appreciated.

European Portuguese
Proposed translations (English)
4 bank or bankers box
4 Banco 8 : 8 database (number eigth)

Agreed I think you got it, but you may want to wait more input from other people. =)
Lucy Phillips (asker) Jul 17, 2014:
ok, I've managed to find more information (and pictures!) of the archive in question. It looks like a small traditional library, where both original documentation and microfiches can be consulted. There are several bookcases. Could banco even be shelf?
Lucy Phillips (asker) Jul 17, 2014:
hi Thiago, no - unfortunately not. I will see if I can find out any more information on the archive in question which might help!
Thiago Araujo Jul 17, 2014:
I'd say database Is there more context to confirm?
Bench?

bank or bankers box

Two options spring to mind depending on how the archives are being stored:

1) On a shelf - use the term bank e.g. Series D, Bank 8, Books 3 & 4.
A synonym of shelf is bank and I have seen the term used in archival systems before.

2) In a cardboard box or similar - use the term bankers box.
A bankers box is a common term in offices for those large cardboard or similar storage boxes, themselves stored on shelves or stacked up on the floor.

See the links for reference.

Note from asker:
Hi John - I think your answer is very likely the right one (bank rather than bankers box here), but I'm leaving the question open for a little while to see if that can be confirmed. Thanks for the input.
