I often post to say "do not translate", but only for titles of organisations and so on. This term describes a type of "association" which MCHD's reference clearly points out :
"... des associations syndicales régies par les dispositions de la loi du 21 juin 1865 et des textes subséquents ainsi que par celles de la présente section, constituées entre propriétaires intéressés pour l'exécution des travaux et opérations énumérés à l'article L. 322-2", a particular type of association governed by the [French] law of 1865.
I agree that the term "association" is tricky in French and that it has implications that the term does not necessarily have as, well, as France is not England.
This one is not as dodgy as translating the name of an association for example, but it does require careful translation and perhaps an indication of the French term as a footnote due to its special meaning. It is not the translator's job to say that it is in ref to a particular law, but translating it as something along the lines of "urban land association" + a footnote reference to the original French term is probably necessary to indicate that it is a special term with special meaning.

An 'association' in France is specifically (and legally) a non-profit making group. 'Association' in English does not have that specific meaning. I am also not entirely convinced that this is limited to land owners/ ownership (although they will normally be the prime ones, certainly).

iFrom some brief research, I think that In US English 'association' is commonly used in the same sense, but I feel that in UK English 'group' or 'organisation' is more common (e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Landowners'_Organ...

However, in order to translate correctly you should probably include 'non-profit' or 'not for profit' etc.

Personally I would probably retain the French term and explicate.

My take is urban land ownership associations but I wanted to use a translation that had been used before, thanks
