I just encountered this phrase in my translation. I searched through proz database and found that this phrase has been asked in other language pair but have not been unanswered.

It is a shipping document required for the letter of credit application. Letter of credit is a binding document that a buyer can request from his bank in order to guarantee that the payment for goods will be transferred to the seller. Basically, a letter of credit gives the seller reassurance that he will receive the payment for the goods. In order for the payment to occur, the seller has to present the bank with the necessary shipping documents confirming the shipment of goods within a given time frame. It is often used in international trade to eliminate risks such as unfamiliarity with the foreign country, customs, or political instability.

En maritime : Le ou Bill of lading (b/L). Il est délivré par le Capitaine du navire. Après sa signature par ce dernier, ou son agent, le Capitaine reconnaît avoir reçu les marchandises qui y sont mentionnées et s'engage à les transporter aux conditions convenues et à les délivrer à destination conformément aux instructions reçues moyennant le paiement du fret. Le connaissement est émis en exécution d'un contrat de transport. Il donne droit à la délivrance et donc à la possession des marchandises à destination. Ainsi, s'il constitue le support matériel du contrat de transport, le connaissement est de plus un titre représentatif des marchandises.
