Explanation:
You earn your degree when you graduate or finish a program. It wouldn't make sense to wait an entire year to receive your degree. Your diploma, on the other hand, is the official looking document with fancy seals and words in Latin that no one can read, and that might be mailed to you some time after you make an official request to have it mailed. A year is a bit much, but that's beside the point.

"In countries such as the United Kingdom and Australia, the word diploma refers to a level of academic award"... which is why I prefer to use "certificate" or "qualification" rather than "diploma", which I'd reserve for post-grad qualifications or shorter duration courses.
