English term or phrase: teacher in overall charge of class in USA
Classes at schools are taught by different teachers for different subjects, but there is one teacher who is responsible for the class in general. IN UK English this would be "class tutor", but I can find no US references at all for this term, so I assume that it is something different in US English.

agree  Charles Davis: Yes, that's my understanding, and from the other side of the pond I think "class teacher" is probably the term. In my day we referred to our "form master" (or "form mistress") in high school.

Ignore the above; I completely misunderstood what you were asking.

For your question, the term that I know is "Head teacher", although I'm not sure whether this is a UK or US term.

neutral  Arabic & More: Have never heard "head teacher" to describe what Jack is asking about in the U.S. We used to report to the homeroom teacher in junior high and high school (see Demi's answer above).
