From grades 1 to 6, students in the U.S. usually only have one teacher (the classroom teacher) who teaches them all the core subjects (math, English, science, history, etc.).

Like Demi said, though, they may have specialist teachers for subjects like music, P.E., art, or a foreign language.

When children enter middle school or junior high (starting at grade 6 or 7, depending on the school district), they have a different teacher for each core subject and report to the homeroom teacher.

Just wanted to confirm what Demi is saying.

The term you use will depend on the age of the children, but if the situation is as you have described in your initial post, the correct term is definitely "homeroom teacher."

Younger children in grades 1 to 6 do not have homeroom teachers, only a classroom teacher who is responsible for pretty much everything, including teaching.

The classroom teacher is the specialist in each class that teaches language, history, math, and so on. The Homeroom teacher is the one central person you have inquired about. That applies to Middle and high school (gr 6-12) In US elementary school, the classroom teacher is the central teacher and the students only leave the class for PE or Music specialists. The description you have posted absolutely describes an elementary school teacher.
