I'm pretty sure I understand this (I just don't believe it), but I don't understand the derivation.

That's how I would express this in America

That's right, ахуеть is a lazy spelling of охуеть meaning to be shocked/flabbergasted by something. The root is хуй, though that wouldn't help you directly in finding a good equivalent.

Another option (for the US):
You gotta be fucking kidding
or simply
Fucking bullshit
or
What the fuck?

Without more context there's no way to tell exactly what this refers to or what's going through the writer's mind. It could be many different emotions.

Thanks for the explanation - this one got away, and was simply translated as "I just can't believe it"! [I was asking after the event]

this may help in terms of where it's derived from ("ахуй" - shock, frustration, anger.. )

I guess there's quite a few ways to translate it, if you wanted that
Fuck my balls/life
This is f*cking insane

but exact context would help as well

Asker: Thanks for the reference. I really don't want to post much context, because the email exchange is very personal and bitter. It's almost certainly a divorce case.

Asker: Aha - so the root is хуй? (That word that has about 8 columns in my dictionary of slang!)
