The more recent BSID III (not used for any of the trials in this meta-analysis) further divides the Mental Scale into separate Cognitive and Language Composite scales.

The Oral and Written Language Scales (OWLS) is an assessment of receptive and expressive (oral and written) language for children and young adults. OWLS consists of three conormed Scales: Listening Comprehension (LC), Oral Expression (OE), and Written Expression (WE). The OWLS WE ASSIST provides the scoring and interpretation of the Written Expression Scale.
This ASSIST also provides interpretation of the Language Composite, which is a global measure of written and oral language ability.
