German to English translations [PRO]
Tech/Engineering - Energy / Power Generation / Power plant construction project
German term or phrase: Kleingewerke
"Der AN wird bei der Anfrage von Unteraufträgen für Kleingewerke die am Kraftwerksstandort örtlich ansässigen Firmen in den Wettbewerb einbeziehen und im Falle wettbewerbsfähiger Angebote beauftragen."

I'm checking a translation for a power company that is doing a major project. Where 'Gewerk' was mentioned previously, I have - following research on Proz - amended the original translation ('work') to 'project phase' as this seems more appropriate for the context (the construction of a "Duo-Dampferzeugeranlage" as part of the wider project). However, I have now come across 'Kleingewerke'. The translator has chosen 'minor work'. I'm not sure if that would be appropriate in the context and what indeed 'Kleingewerke' would be.

The amended translation, as it currently stands, is as follows:
"When requesting proposals for minor work from subcontractors, the Contractor will involve companies based in the local area of the power plant in the bidding process and will appoint them if their bids are competitive."

I welcome any input.
Thanks

minor (tradesmans') works (brackets = optional)
Explanation:
Seems straighforward enough to me.

My favourite would be simply

"MINOR WORKS"

"minor tradesmans' works",

would also be possible, since "Gewerk "also has the meaning of trades in building and plant-related industries , but that would exclude some forms of minor works and imply that only one person was required for each job.

("minor tradespeople's works" in politically correct English :)
)
Hope that helps.

In the context, I ended up choosing a suggestion from the discussion entries (minor subcontract work), but following this interesting discussion, I think the translator's original 'minor works' is fine for most instances.

small work section

Explanation:
I typically translate Gewerk as 'work section' or 'project section'. Neither phrase gets many Google hits but my client likes it
